Serious Men REVIEW | Netflix original | Nawazuddin Siddiqui | Sudhir Mishra | Movieshuvie
" Serious men" that just got released on Netflix and is making waves. It is an unusual story of a father played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui , who while growing up experienced an "under-priviledged" status because of caste system in India , and soon realises, that the world is in the hands of those men who sit in high-end offices with some differentiation.
Hence, he hatches a master plan to earn respect in the society, by conning the entire world in believing that, his son is a genius mastermind with a very high IQ.
It is shown that his son is believed to be a genius by the world and even gets admission in a good school and further gets a lot of media attention.
But the twist in the story, is that the boy is actually faking his intelligence with the help of his father and nobody notices that, not even his own mother. Thats uncaany but can be excused work of fiction.
The movie raises 3 very important issues:
1. Society issue that is inequality/caste system/politics and poor education system.
2. Secondly, it is not good for the children to bear the burden of their parent’s ambitions as tends to kill their innocent childhood.
3. Thirdly, Shortcuts / over-ambition in life even for a good cause can distroy lives around us.
So, in nutshell, Serious men is about a father trying to give his son a great life but by taking the shortcut.
The Good thing in the movies is the fact that hard messages are delivered in a humours manned by the director Sudhir Mishra, who has done a very fine job even with the screenplay.
1. The story is different with good dialogues. The characters interact in a natural way and its commentary on society doesn't come across as preachy.
2. The performances are great especially Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the child artist Akshat Das. some scenes between Nawazuddin and Akshat touch the heart immesely. This is Nawaz's award-winning act where his body language, dialogue delivery are able to bring out the pain, agony, suffering, frustration, happiness, ambitions, and above all- love for his son.
3. The film criticizes a lot of things that happen in society in a funny way.
Few things that could have been dealt better are...
1. The ending is more or less predictable.
2. Editing could have been better and the run time of movie can be cut down by 15-20 minutes to make more sharper.
So, guy overall the movie has a lot of plus points. The dramtic and emotional climax will make your heart skip a beat where we have Nawaz explaining his action and also, course correction. I was overwhelmed. Nowadays, I hardly see a movie with an ending that offers a complete closure. 'Serious Men' has that kind of ending and give the right path to the viewers/audience without being preachy.
