Dabangg's fate at the box office is known to all. While it might have done about Rs. 140 cr at the box office but BHAI's film usually does double of that on a holiday release.
What lead to this disaster?
Well it is not very tough to gage. Let us begin with answering a simple question i.e. "Why would someone see "Dabangg"?
1. A successful franchise with an interesting character Chulbul Pandey
2. Film treatment, music and fight sequences in a UP setup YET reminds us of Quentin Tarantin
3. Story that was watertight with a mighty villian
4. All character are well established
5. Biggest reason - Salman Khan
5. Biggest reason - Salman Khan
Dabangg 3 couldn't even generate enough pre-buzz and that is reflected in it ordinary Rs. 22-24 cr opening collections at the BO. Salman's film are expected to do much more. One can blame the CAA movement for poor footfalls at the cinema halls but during the same time another movie with a right blend became a blockbuster. We are referring to Akshay Kumar's Good Newzz
So, what went wrong. People can have different views but I think it is Salman's arrogance and ignorance played its part. He is trying to ride too much on his luck and not on the SMART choices he use to make. While never changed his larger than life image but his movies still had variations like KICK was very different from Dabangg or Bajrangi Bhaijaan or even Tiger.
Dabangg 3 has a better premise than previous versions but still is a flop becuase the STORY writing is weak. No points of guessing the writer's name. It is the alrounder Salman ji who believes he is can do anything. Nothing is watertight and viewers are considered fools. Example - there is no explantion why Sudeep doesn't die even after falling from a high cliff and Saiee does? Why was Dhaakad Chand Pandey shown slightly dumb/ nona bachcha before become The Chulbul Pandey? Why Chulbul's entry is so repetitive in a dungeon in all three versions of the movie? So boring..
Second mistake, is diluting the character built by the first installment director Abhinav Kashyap. He created a character that fearless not superhuman. He is dark but has a heart. He is jovial but is an introvert. Dialogues like "Gulbab jamun se yaar aaya...", are missing and hence we miss the character / personality too. There is no vulnerability at all in the new character which make Salman a superman and not a fearless mastmola man.
Lastly, a big blunder to make films with dear one only. List of not so suitable friends - Prabhudeva with ordinary direction, Sonakshi with flat acting, Saiee Majerekar isn't that charismatic for the first raw love, Sudeep is a very dull villian with language issues (Nothing close to Chedi Singh played by Sonu Sood), Arbaz who looks not so interested in acting and many more such people. Why is Salman extending favours and hiring right people for the job. He has only added pressure on himself in the movie and is virtually there in every scene. We don't want to see so much of the main hero. Give a fair chance to build other character as well. I think above people are so obligated of Salman that they just do what he says rather than proposing what is right for the film. Salman clearly hasn't learnt anything from the failure of Race 3.
Disaster was hence inevitable. Salman has to stop taking people for granted. Take more time for meaning masala movies. There is no pressure to come on EID always with a substandard product or to suddenly do a acting oriented movie. He is a hero not an actor and people love him like that.
There is rough road ahead, another failure would mean end of his career at this age. Distributors will pull back in no time.
