Tanaji is a courageous story of a Mahashtrian Military leader played by Ajay Devgn.
The story is set in 16th century and what works for the film is that the director manages to take us in that era. Visuals, weapons, attire etc all are carefully designed.
While there is all good about this film including a story that hasn't been heard before, one thing I really liked about the director / writer is the way portrayed the protagonist "Tanaji". He isn't a superhero doing some miraculous things but rather an inspiring brave heart leader who literally leads by examples. Strategising and disguising are his real weapons.
Saif Ali khan the villain in the film and is superb , fabulous and what not. He is so good that he made up for the weak buildup of this character 'Uday Bhan Singh Rathore'. He is just bad... I mean just really really bad. Too much gets build up on his cruelty but why? There isn't a background accept being a rejected lover by a Rajput Princess. Is that enough to become a great warrior, ruthless, cunning etc etc. If love defines him then why such hatred?
Also an important question, 'cruelty' is some manner is attributed to Mughals in the film. Why is Udaybhan, just happens to be their military leader and a Rajput was so cruel? Anyways... Was still very effective. I loved the scene where he roasts a crocodile at a river coast. The scene defines him... Cruel than the cruelest if one can say.
Other actors were all good include Kajol who has a 5 minutes role.
I felt that story telling was a bit stretched and certain emotions could have been better handled or triggered like 'swaraj'. If you really want people to feel for the people in that Era and the intent is to evoke some emotion behind the revolt, then then better show what was suppression / being abused in that Era.
I mean no harm leaving 'suppression' as a mere words in the film for audience to comprehend but then visually it doesn't register in the head. Now don't tell me that audience shouldn't be spoon fed because my debate on evoking an emotion and involving them in the struggle of the Marathas. It should be heartfelt.
The Great Shivaji Maharaj was an inspiration to many including Tanaji. His vision / wisdom or story of his courage could have build the Maratha universe further. Adding few scenes were enough to transport us. Sharad Kelkar as him was very effective.
Overall, the film leaves a mark. It is a story to be told and heard carefully. Respect to all martyr who lived and died for the country.
It is an important film today when the things like CAA is getting discussed in the country. Such films tell us to put the nations interest ahead of anything else.
Go watch with your friends and family. Should be a super hit at the box office.
