Terminator series always fascinated me. The latest buzz word "Artificial Intelligence " was first discussed and exploited by the great James Cameron way back in 1984.
For the young generation let's do a quick recap. The first two instalments called the 'The terminator ' and 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' in the year 1985 and 1991 were created and directed by the visionary sci-fi director James Cameron. These movies saw the rise of an actor - Arnold Schwarzenegger as the terminator which became his identity forever. The movies shows how machines through AI can possible see humans as threats and might act against them and possibly kill them. The fascinating part was robots that looked like humans , couldn't be identified in crowd but has supernatural abilities. Different terminators / robots were given different names in various series , the most significant being T800 with human tissue and metal skeleton played by the macho Arnie. Arnie did what he did so well because of his physical appearance in 80s. Tall, broad, muscular and with limited machine like expressions. His 2 dialogues became iconic. 'I will be back' and 'Hasta la vista, baby' .
Interestingly this machine is shown the most primitive in the series (even in the last series dark fate), yet is able to contribute significantly in defeating the modern machines sent to kill.
Yes kill... what is the whole killing thing? Who is killing whom and why?
Well in future an AI known 'skynet' gains conscious beyond its program and contemplates humans as threat to machines. So the future machine attacks humans and gives rise to human resistance lead by a leader named John Connor. The movie series starts by sending future machine T800 back in time to kill John's mother Sarah Conner so that she doesn't have an offspring thereby avoiding any future human resistance. The first two movies were great because it had a fine balance of technology , show stoppers in the form of unthinkable human like machines and a fine blend of emotions / fear. The machine doesn't stop till the time the target is killed / terminated. They are programmed like that...
Terminator 2 was big box office grosser.
Later in 2003, 2009 and 2015 came 3 other series of terminator but could deliver the same magic but commercially were able to recover the making cost. I think the main reason was absence of James Cameron.
James Cameron is back now with Terminator the dark fate as producer / screenwriter and one can feel the spark coming back again. Dark fate get the twist in the story with alternate timeline wherein Sarah is able to save the world but isn't able to save John. The new person to be saved in this series is Dani Ramos which will lead the resistance in future like John against 'the legion '. Legion in the new timeline is another dangerous 'skynet' kind of AI that sees humans as dangerous to machines.
Uff... enough of the background now . Let's move on with the review. This movie according to me will revive the Terminator series with an excellent story , great action , superb characterisation of the new machine terminator Called Rev-9.
To me how T800 ages , gain own conscious and blends with human kind is something very interestingly handled. When Arnie say that I am a patient listener and is extremely funny actual describes what humans want from each each other and a machine is learning to blend In seamlessly. Both Linda Hamilton (original Sarah Connor) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (T800) acted will and brought memories of the great original series. There is subtle humour between them as well.
Rev-9 actor Gabriel Luna was decent but nothing like T1000 of Terminator 2.
Grace played by Mackenzie Davis was very good. She is tall as hell and look strong to take on a terminator.
What I liked the most was the last seen where a machine 'T800' behaved like a human and sacrificed his life. A machine learning the significance of life , death , emotions and also sacrifice is dealt intelligently.
Only one thing bothers me now that is will Arnold return back as terminator or not. His dialog 'and I will not be back' is disturbing.
Overall the terminator series fan and the new gen should like the The dark fate. My rating is 4 stars.
